Self Awareness, How To Recognize When You Need A Change

I sit here writing this post with so many different messages going through my mind. But also feeling like I don’t want to write anything at all. As do’ers and makers, we feel like we need to have everything all together. To feel like we know what we are doing all the time. I also think it is a firstborn trait. Sorry to all of my fellow firstborns that I just threw under the bus.

Every so often it is inevitable that you will go through a time where you have to make a change. Something that causes you to take a step back and evaluate what is important. To ask yourself if this is what you really want.

I guess I should explain. You see over the past month I was starting to get burnt out because I was doing several things that were not true to me. I was trying to post all the things on social and build a youtube channel. While at the same time thinking off adding a podcast. You know why? Because I didn’t think I could be successful without doing everything.

But here is the funny part. I am not what I would call a social butterfly. I prefer a few deeper relationships. I don’t like big crowds and dealing with a lot of people all at once makes me what to hide inside my shell like a hermit crab and not come out until they all go away. Not that people scare me, it is just exhausting to be around that much energy. Yet I was trying to build an audience on 2 Facebook pages, youtube, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, the blog, and thinking of adding a podcast. I was suffering from the fear of missing out.

The reason I think I was trying to do each of them was that I love to teach people. I want their lives to be better and help them to chase their dreams. To make a life they want to live. I see so many unhappy people working so hard and yet they are not enjoying the life they have. I guess you could say my desire to fix things was kicking in. Just in the virtual form.

Once asking a question in a Facebook group. Mainly to find out if other people felt the way I did. And that was if social media died tomorrow I would not be the least bit sad. To be honest I would be more than excited about it.

In that thread of comments, one woman left a comment that was so simple but struck a note with me. She said,

“Just don’t forget it’s your business and you make the rules.”

And that is when it hit me. She was so right. And the funny thing was. That was exactly what I had been doing for the past 7+ years until I started researching and listening to all of these other voices. Thinking that they were making the rules when in reality they were just telling me what worked for them.

I was the one who made those tips into the rules of the game.

For the rabbitry, I had made my own rules and don’t what I felt was right and what worked. The results were beyond my wildest dreams.

How To Recognize Something Needs To Change

Most often we start to feel tired or apathetic to the things we used to love doing. Your mind is not staying focused on the task you are trying so hard to do. You might even have a dip in your mood to the point of wanting to sleep at the thought of the problem.

Those things should be your first clues that something is not connecting with you personally. You need to do something different. If you are doing too much. You need to stop and ask yourself what is not giving you the return on the investment you want? Find out if there is a way you could get a better result. Or if you need to do things in a different way.

So How Do You Take Your Life Back?

In this crazy world we live in we are lacking self-awareness. We are so tied up with our devices and doing more in less time that we can’t see what is happening right in front of us.

Make time to ask yourself, “is this what I really want? Does this make me happy?”

Find out why you are doing something but also what it is gaining you. I love making videos. Editing them and seeing that I could do it just made it so exciting. But the honest truth was being on camera and doing all of the recordings was exhausting.

Don’t stop doing what you enjoy just because someone says it is an all or nothing option. If you approach building a life and business with the idea of making the rules up as you go. You are free to try things out. You are not a failure if you find out you don’t like something.

Self Awareness Takes Time & Practice

Listen to what your heart is telling you. The more you stop and listen, the clearer that voice will become. Sometimes you might not hear anything. That is when you keep moving forward the best you can until you do finally get the answers you are looking for.

Learn how to listen to your gut.

Self Awareness Gives You The Strength To Never Give Up

Having self awareness does not mean you are weak. It makes you strong and gives you the ability to make choices that will benefit the entire situation. You need the grit to make changes in your life and to be strong enough to recognize that you need something different. It makes you adaptable.

The definition of grit has so simple but full of power.

Courage and resolve; strength of character.

Synonyms: courage, courageousness, bravery, backbone, spirit, strength of character, strength of will, moral fiber, steel, nerve, valor, fortitude, toughness, hardiness, resolve, determination, resolution; stamina, tenacity, perseverance, endurance

Just reading those words should make you want to take on the world. It doesn’t mean getting through things quickly it just means doing whatever it takes to make yourself feel better about the current situation and fixing what is causing you emotional stress.

Changes Don’t Have To Be Drastic

Sometimes when people think of change, they think they need to completely redo their life. It can be as simple as shifting your routine up a bit or making a schedule to help you feel less scattered. Or simply taking a break can make you come alive again.

Tweek, don’t completely throw out the problem.

As you keep moving towards your goal of self-awareness you need to know that you won’t be perfect at it right off the bat. The key is to correct the feelings of overwhelm, but don’t beat yourself up for not staying on track. Correct the behavior and move forward. What situation makes you want to be more aware?
