How To Handle Grief On The Farm
It goes without saying that when you live a rural lifestyle you are going to experience grief and disappointment.
- It could be in the form of the loss of animals that had your heart.
- Or the loss of livestock that maybe were not pets but you put a lot of energy and care into them.
- It could be that your garden got a pest or fungus in it, and your entire summer’s worth of work is gone.
- Or your life is just not going the way you thought it would in this season of life. – You pictured it differently.
I personally have had to deal with two situations that caused a lot of grief.
I recently had to deal with the loss of putting my dog down that I had for his entire life. He was old and I knew it was coming but it still left a sting.
Then for life in general life is just not how I pictured it in this season for reasons that will remain just for me. But I felt like I shouldn’t be feeling sad about this situation because society says I should be excited about it.
Don’t belittle your grief or emotional pain.
It may feel small when you compare it to other people’s struggles but that is how it feels to you. And it’s important to acknowledge that.
If you are feeling frustrated with loss or disappointment. I have a two-fold process that can help you move through grief no matter where it is coming from.
When it is new and fresh you have to just let it be.
Don’t fight it. It’s the fight that makes those feelings even harder. If you let them just exist and keep moving in spite of them. They will lessen with time.
As rural women you are going to experience grief and loss on the farm. Whether it comes from a decision you have to make, something you knew was coming and it forced you into action, or it was by total surprise.
When you stand in your power and take the action it’s far less defeating, even in the pain.

Remember, it’s about letting your feelings just be for a time. But once you have grieved for a season start training your brain to accept that what’s in the past is the past. And it can’t be changed. But what we can change is the future.
