Cornbread is a delicious staple in many country kitchens and is not just a holiday dinner side dish. But what do you do when you have leftover cornbread? Cornbread freezes better than most bread and is a great option to have homemade cornbread already made for that busy night when you need to have dinner done quickly.
But how do you ensure it stays fresh and tasty for as long as possible? While nothing will be quite the same as fresh cornbread the good news is it’s not too difficult to save it for future use.
I’ll share my best tips to on how to freeze cornbread and keep it fresh longer. Plus give you container suggestions to help keep it airtight.
How to Freeze Cornbread
Freezing cornbread is an easy process, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the best results. Here are the steps to follow:
- Let it cool: Allow the cornbread to cool completely before freezing. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the bag or container. – If you don’t that will leave you with that gooey mess on top of the cornbread.
- Cut it: Cut the cornbread into individual pieces or slices. This will make it easier to defrost and reheat later. – If you put the entire loaf of cornbread in the freezer you will heat the edges before the middle comes close to being warm.
- Wrap it: Wrap each portion of cornbread in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This will prevent freezer burn and keep the cornbread fresh.
- Bag it in a heavy-duty freezer bag: Place the wrapped cornbread in a resealable plastic bag. Label the bag with the date and type of cornbread. – Especially if you have someone with food allergies in your family. You don’t have to throw these out every time you use them. I use a large freezer bag and save them for next time in the cabinet.
- Freeze it: Place the bag in the freezer and freeze for up to three months. – Closer to the back of the freezer is even better to keep air from getting to it when you open and close the freezer.
Tips for Keeping Cornbread Fresh
Cornbread is one of the hardest breads to keep fresh and moist. It draws damp so quickly.
Even when frozen, cornbread can still lose its freshness over time. Here are some tips to keep it as fresh as possible:
- Use the best quality ingredients you can find: The better the ingredients, the better the cornbread will taste and last.
- Store it properly: Cornbread should be stored in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the fridge. It will last up to three days this way.
- Reheat it properly: When reheating cornbread, wrap it in a damp paper towel and microwave for 10-15 seconds. This will prevent it from drying out.
- Don’t refreeze it: Once cornbread has been thawed, it should not be refrozen. This will cause it to lose its texture and flavor.
- Keep an eye on it: Check the cornbread regularly for any signs of freezer burn or spoilage. If it looks or smells off, it’s best to throw it out or give it to the chickens.
How Long Does Cornbread Last in the Freezer?
When freezing cornbread, make sure to wrap it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing it in an airtight container or bag. This will help maintain its texture, prevent frostbite and help keep contaminants out.
Generally, frozen cornbread can last for about 3-4 months for optimal freshness but make sure to label the bag or container with the date you placed it in the freezer so you know how long it’s been frozen. Doing so could save you from eating stale cornbread or messing up your dinner plans when you thought you had a portion of the meal done.
How to Reheat After Defrosting
Reheating frozen or thawed food can often seem daunting, especially when it comes to something delicate like cornbread.
Fortunately, reheating cornbread after defrosting is a straightforward process that only takes a few minutes.
To begin the process of reheating your cornbread, allow it to thaw out while still wrapped in its plastic or aluminum wrapping, either at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator. If you force thaw it in the microwave you will end up with a much dryer piece of bread.
My Preferred Method: Once thawed, remove the plastic wrap or aluminum foil and rewrap it in new aluminum foil. Place the loaf, mini cakes, or wedge of smaller portions on a baking sheet and bake in an oven set to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for around 10 minutes or until thoroughly heated through. This will recreate that freshly-baked taste without jeopardizing its texture and consistency.

- Make cornbread muffins instead of loaves of bread.
- Make the cornbread batter and freeze it so all you have to do is bake it.
- Mix together the dry ingredients for the entire batch of the recipe for a whole loaf of cornbread so that is one part of the recipe already complete.
